Post-race!

We’re proud that PS 107 has the largest elementary-school track team in New York City!

The track team is a no-cut team open to all PS 107 students and alumni led by Ms. Diane, Ms. Mary, Ms. Katie, Ms. Sharon, Ms. Jennifer, Coach Paul, and parent volunteers. Students attend weekly practices and have the opportunity to compete in cross-country and indoor meets year-round. Until December, and then again in April, the track team practices in Prospect Park. In winter or during inclement or extremely cold weather, the team practices in the Park Slope Armory Y.

Track is a great way to build confidence and strength, introducing what we hope will be a lifelong habit of moderate, regular physical exercise. The benefits are both physical and emotional. Participants learn about healthy competition and working as a team. They learn to move in different ways. They can release their daily frustrations in a positive manner. The pride our students feel about this program is easily seen: Track jackets are a very popular clothing item at PS 107.

There is a track class through Afterschool. You must register with Afterschool to attend. However, since we are a team that is part of the school and not Afterschool, we also offer an optional 7 am Thursday morning run (with parents). The Thursday morning run is not part of the Afterschool program.

I’m lucky to say I’ve been teaching at PS 107 since 1998, and I have been part of the PS 107 Afterschool program since then as well.  I started my career as a special education teacher, then taught first grade, and since 2006, I have been teaching physical education. Teaching PE is my passion. I adore the kids, and I get to know each of them from pre-k through fifth grade. Their smiles brighten my day.

I started the PS 107 track team in 2002. In 2010, Ms. Mary and I incorporated the Mighty Milers Program (now known as the Young Runners Program) into both our PE and our track program. Coaching track has been a highlight of my career. Watching the kids gain self-confidence and work together as a team is amazing. The motivation, determination, and perseverance that the kids bring with them to track is inspiring! I am truly fortunate to be part of something so special.

Ms. Mary

I was the PS 107 PTA VP for fundraising for two years, PTA president for three years, and head of the PE committee for all five. I joined the track team as Ms Diane's assistant coach when my daughter was in second grade, and brought New York Road Runners (NYRR) to the school in 2009. I started alumni track when my daughter went to middle school in 2013 and, at the PTA's request, started Thursday morning track two years ago. I’m the slowest member of the track team, but I have raced countless 5ks, 10ks and half marathons. I’ve also run seven marathons.
